The format for the weekend is very similar to previous years, and has been put together this year by the Scottish Branch. Over the last few years the programme of events has been welcomed by all that have attended, so we expect another enjoyable weekend in Dundee in 2020. You are welcome to attend the whole weekend or just part of it.
Dundee is a different location from our normal AGM venues, but is a city with a rich maritime history, with visits planned to RRS Discovery (early 20th century Antarctic research ship) , HMS Unicorn ( one of the best preserved 18th century Georgian warships) or Verdant Works (a celebration of Dundees jute production)
Should you wish to make your own arrangements, the Dundee V&A is within a few minutes’ walk of the hotel – entrance is free. There will also be a walking map available for members who would wish to explore Dundee on foot rather than attending the organised visits.
Dundee can be easily reached by air (Glasgow or Edinburgh ) by car or by rail (Dundee station is just 10 minutes walk from the hotel

AGM weekend, the full details
The weekend begins on Friday if you wish to stay for the whole weekend. There are informal drinks with the Commodore in the bar on Friday commencing 9:30pm
The venue is:
Apex Hotel
I West Victoria Dock Road
Dundee
DD1 3JP
Saturday
A welcome and registration table will be available in the hotel lobby from 9 am until 10.30 am and a programme of activities will be available. Group bookings will be organised for visiting RSS Discovery (Dundee’s own Antarctic research vessel from the early 20th century), HMS Unicorn (the best preserved Georgian warship in existence, launched in Chatham in 1824) or the Verdant Works (celebrating Dundee’s Jute production history). Alternatively visit the outstanding Dundee V&A. … or amuse yourself on a walking tour of Dundee for any or part of the day – maps to be provided. We are trying to arrange as varied and as flexible programme as possible so everyone can do as little or as much as suits the individual.
The visit to the Verdant works will require a bus journey which cannot be booked in advance so you should plan on carrying change with you for the bus. From the hotel it is a 5 minute walk to the Rail station to catch the X7 bus, two minutes on the bus and then a 5 minute walk at the other end
The Scottish Branch AGM will be held in the APEX hotel at 16:30
Saturday evening banquet: Gathering for pre-dinner drinks from 6.30 pm, dinner will be served in the City Quay Suite at 7.30 pm. Followed by a well-practiced and informed after dinner speaker Iain Flett who bases his theme (loosely) around the Maritime History of Dundee
Sunday
Following breakfast in the hotel, Sunday’s Annual General Meeting and Prize Giving will be held at 10.30 am at Discovery Point, just a few minutes’ walk from the hotel starting with a welcome coffee, tea and shortbread. The AGM will start at 11:00 and concluding with a light but reviving lunch – after the banquet of Saturday evening and hotel buffet breakfast, filled baked potato, salad and fresh fruit should prove a suitable antidote!
Bill Faerestrand has very kindly offered to lead a walking tour up the Law on Sunday afternoon. The Dundee Law is the remains of a volcanic sill; the summit is over 500 feet above sea level. Dundee Law has played a major role in many parts of Scottish history and has a magnificent war memorial atop it. If the weather is unkind, another option will be available
Directions to the hotel and parking can be found here. Guests can normally park at the hotel free of charge.
Travelling to Dundee
By Rail
From London – Dundee is served by the LNER and from Edinburgh – Scotrail. The 10:00, 14:00, 16:00 and 18:00 LNER 125 services from London Kings Cross going to Aberdeen, Inverness and Dundee all stop at Dundee and are no-change services, going straight to Dundee railway station, a 10 minute walk from the AGM Hotel.
Alternatively, you can travel on any train to Edinburgh and then take a Scotrail service to Dundee, trains are every half hour. Book ahead and don’t buy your ticket just to Edinburgh but all the way through to Dundee.
There are other Cross-Country options, the longest being the train from Penzance to Aberdeen. The 0925hrs from Penzance weaves its way through the west country through Plymouth to Bristol, (Bristol Parkway 13.38) thereafter through most stations to Birmingham, Sheffield, Leeds and York (17.30) and Dundee (21.38). There are other cross-country alternatives as well. Cheap fares normally available three months in advance, and this applies to railway tickets from the airport.
If travelling by Train via Glasgow please note the following:
There are no through trains to Dundee via Glasgow. Trains from the south normally arrive into Glasgow Central railway station, and trains to Dundee leave from Queens Street station, a good 5 minutes if you know where you’re going easily 10 if you don’t. It takes 1 he 23 mins for straight through trains to Dundee from Queen Street station. There is a bus to take you between the stations. Fares off-peak are variable, but are typically £20-25 to Dundee.
There are frequent buses from Glasgow’s Central Buchanon street bus station to Dundee, half hourly during the day, but the costs can be as much as £29 return. Journey time by bus is about 1hr 45 mins
Sleeper options
You can take a sleeper train from Euston to Dundee, which may be an option as the train typically leaves Euston between after 2100 hrs, returning 2308hrs.
By Air
There are many different options to fly to Edinburgh, and most, if booked in advance, are cheaper than the train. Edinburgh is a city of Hen and Stag do’s so travelling on Friday can be more expensive. To get to Dundee from the airport there are so many options, and here are just some.
Direct National Express from airport stance E to Dundee, dropping off near the Dundee Railway station. Journey times approx. 1.20 hrs, and the service is every 1.30hrs starting at 07.00. Details from nationalexpress.com tel. 01382 340 006/007. Do check before relying on it as the service may change/be cancelled if there are not enough customers. Fares currently £16 return, if booked on line, and probably cheaper than the train.
The Edinburgh airport trams link to three stations; Edinburgh Gateway, Haymarket and Waverly. Most convenient and shortest is the tram link to Edinburgh Gateway Station, with frequent trains to Dundee. The station is about 5 miles from the airport, but a ticket bought at the airport is expensive. Better to book online a ticket from the airport to Dundee. Shortest distance from the tram to train is at Haymarket, and if you are taking the Edinburgh city airbus then this will be the nearest station. The Airbus also drops you outside Waverly, Edinburgh’s main station, and is frequently quicker than the tram.
Another way from the airport is to take the Stagecoach 747 service to either Inverkeithing (Train Station) or to Halbeath Park and Ride, where there are buses to Dundee. The stop is situated inside the secure area around the airport doors but near the international arrivals exit and not near the tram or City Airbus. Very scenic route from Halbeath to Dundee by bus. 747 buses run every 20 minutes during the day, 30 minutes during the evening.
If travelling by Air via Glasgow please note the following:
There are many different options to fly to Glasgow airport, and the fares may be cheaper than flying to Edinburgh, particularly if you are flying from abroad. Getting from the airport has more limited options and at present there doesn’t appear to be any bus that directly links the airport with Dundee. Most people take the 24/7 No 500-airport bus to Buchanon Street Bus Station. The bus will stop near the Queen Street railway station off George Square, or alternatively ride to the bus station and pick up a Dundee bus. Fares from the airport are £8 per adult.

Dundee has been named the must-visit Scottish destination by countless travel writers, publications and websites. International travel bibles such as Lonely Planet, National Geographic and Conde Nast Traveller have all visited our dynamic and compact city and are now urging visitors to discover Dundee for themselves
The visit to the Verdant works may require a bus journey which cannot be booked in advance so you should plan on carrying change with you for the bus. From the hotel it is a 5 minute walk to the Rail station to catch the X7 bus, two minutes on the bus and then a 5 minute walk at the other end.
